Per a recent study conducted by LinkedIn, 81% of small to medium sized businesses use social media to increase their company’s growth. The remaining 9% of these businesses plan on using social media in the future.

This is a very powerful statistic to know. Where is your business positioned when it comes to social media? Is your business one of the 81% sited to capitalize on the many social media benefits?

Or are you contributing to the size of the 9% group of business that are lagging? When businesses start to interact in the social media landscape; there are several very important statistics that a lot of these businesses are not paying attention to.

Here is a list of seven statistics that we here at 7 Levels feel that most businesses over look.

1) 53% of people recommend companies and products on Twitter.

As of 2016, Twitter is averaging around 317 million active users. 53% of 317 million is about 168 million users, isn’t this a staggering number of people recommending businesses? Twitter is an excellent platform for listening to what your customers are saying about your brand, and to get feedback from prospects about your industry in general.

This is very important for your brands reputation. You want make sure your customers are giving your company a positive endorsement to their followers. There are several listening tools that you can use to see what people are saying about your brand in real time. Knowing how to listen is essential; you must be able to respond to your customers promptly whether they are saying something negative or positive about your brand. Anna Johansson, CEO of Johansson Consulting says in her article, “When someone asks your brand a question, answer it. When someone compliments you, thank them. These are basic tenets of responsible social interaction, and if you ignore them, you’ll lose ground in the respect department—not only from the followers you ignored, but also from any other users who witnessed the snub.” This is something very important to remember. 78% of people who complain to a brand through Twitter expect a reply within an hour.

2) The average user has 130 friends, and is connected to 80 pages, events and groups.

This is why Facebook likes and twitter follows are so important. When someone likes your Facebook business page, all of their friends can see that they have liked your page. Think of a restaurant that is always empty; would that restaurant be your first choice when choosing where to have dinner? What about that steak house that’s always packed?

That steak house people have to make reservations in advance to have dinner there, or that drive through that’s always has a long line.

Social media is something in the same; people want to do business with brands that have a following. People tend to follow the crowd. Are Facebook likes more important than an individual visiting your website; I think it depends on who you ask. When engaging with customers through content marketing, or whatever social media marketing strategy you use try to incorporate an element that will influence virality. You want as many people sharing and liking your content as possible so your brand looks like that packed steak house, and not that empty Chinese food restaurant!!

3) 51% of Facebook users, and 64% of Twitter users, are more likely to buy from the brands they follow

Cementing your online presence is imperative to your e-commerce efforts; or just increasing sales in general. People are inclined to do business with brands that make them feel special, or that they receive value, or incentive from. Incorporate giveaways, free offers, provide information and content that your customers can benefit from. These are proven ways for your brand to stay liked among your customers, prospects, and anyone else that encounters your brand through social media.

4) Facebook is the most visited website (of all websites)

You need to have a leveraged position where the traffic is. Facebook is continuously growing, adding more businesses and people every day. Now is the time to make sure you have a proven plan in place to take advantage of all the positives the Facebook platform can offer.

5) You lose 97% of leads on poorly designed landing pages

So….. you put in all the work to drive prospects to your landing page, and you lose 97% of your leads? Holy crap that’s a big gaping hole in your marketing funnel there Kowalski. If a landing page is a part of your social media marketing plan, make sure that it is set up correctly. It needs to have a clean concise call to action, and a clear way to collect your prospects contact information. Another method, is to drive prospects to a phone number. I’m one of those people that like to talk to a live person. I don’t like to order things online; I like to talk to a live person to make sure that I have a clear understanding of what I am purchasing.

6) Photo posts make up 87% of Facebook page interactions

Every marketing piece you design should have some type of photo to go along with it. Incorporating more photos in your marketing method will insure that you maximize your chances for engagement. The average attention span of a person is 8 seconds. It’s probably even shorter than that when people are swiping their phones with their thumb looking at what’s on their timelines. The photos in your posts need to have enough pizzazz to catch a would-be users eye. Photos are the first thing that a person’s eye will be drawn to. Find photos that are captivating, and match points that your marketing strategy is trying to stress.

7) Only about a third of B2C marketers consider themselves effective at content marketing

How do you measure how effective your content marketing strategy has been for your business? What metrics do you use to measure ROI on your social media marketing campaigns? Having a proven method or tool to accurately inform you of these measurable will have a massive impact on your social media marketing campaigns. Have a clear and detailed plan on how you plan to reach your goals, then create content that supports your strategy.
